Carers' Support
St. Luke's Hospice recognises the particular strain and often varied support needs of family or friends who are caring for someone with a life threatening life limiting illness at home. Carers can be anyone living with the responsibility of caring in this way. Every hospice service is committed to assessing the needs of carers individually and as part of the care set up within their homes. Carers remain included in care at the level they choose. Support for carers includes: JEMS A 6 week programme consisting of 6 Mondays, 10.00 – 3.00 p.m. JEMS aims to support both the patient and carer by attending the group together and sharing their experiences in a safe and supportive environment. They also receive information about all the Hospice services before they need them. Referral to JEMS is by a Health Care Professional. Time 4 You This programme aims to support carers who are looking after patients at home. It is spread over 6 weeks with carers meeting in the Day Hospice lounge. They have sessions on the practical side of caring including information on medications, pain control, manual handling, nutritional demonstration and end of life care which is discussed in a safe and supportive environment. Carers also have the opportunity to visit St Luke’s House, enjoy complementary therapies, learn relaxation techniques and share a lunch time meal together.
