Dove Community Counselling Service (DCCS) is delivered from four sites in, Grays, Basildon, Corringham and Billericay providing a service to support patients receiving palliative care and their families within Thurrock, Basildon, Billericay and Wickford.

This service currently provides support to clients living with cancer and other life limiting illness at all stages of the disease pathway, from diagnosis through to end of life or into survivorship. The service also extends to supporting their families and carers. We also offer support to anyone that has been bereaved within the last 5 years as well as general bereavement support for families and carers who may have suffered a traumatic bereavement such as a road traffic accident, industrial accident, suicide or other sudden deaths.

When someone important dies people can experience a debilitating range of emotions, some of which can be very frightening and disturbing. The service aims to acknowledge anyone who has agreed to support within 24 hours of receiving the referral.

An Initial Assessment is arranged in order to discuss the most beneficial support available. This may include:

  • Community Support Volunteers (CSV) – Listening service in the home (Home visits can be arranged in specific cases on medical grounds)
  • Counseling - one to one and bereaved couples
  • Family Therapy – working jointly with Lukes Children’s Service
  • Bereavement Groups – support group one evening every month at one of our venues, for bereaved people who have had one to one counseling sessions and would like further support in a group environment.
  • Creative Therapy Groups – diversional therapy with enables people to take part in a creative activity, whilst being able to explore their grief in a safe environment.
  • Social Groups – in Basildon, Grays and Billericay taking place during the evenings, daytime and weekends – run by people who have experienced bereavement.
  • Counselling Clinic – based at the Hospice providing a ‘drop in’ service daily for families and patients on the In-Patient Unit and Day Hospice
  • Couples counseling –providing a safe environment for couples to explore their grief together whilst acknowledging that each person’s grief is individual.

  • The service is compliant with the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Chapter 12 and works within the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

Counselling is an opportunity to explore feelings, thoughts and memories. Once counseling has started you will meet weekly with your Counsellor for a 50 minute session and your appointment will be at the same time each week for 6 to 10 sessions.
